Mediated through the nervous system, overactive organs are calmed and underactive organs are strengthened, producing measurable changes in blood chemistry which affect such factors as triglycerides, neurotransmitters, and hydrocortisone. Acupuncture increases the secretion of endorphins, endogenous morphine-like chemicals which block the transmission of pain through the mechanism called gate control.
Although we still do not fully understand all of the mechanisms through which acupuncture works, existing research points to several possible explanations for it's effectiveness and much more research is currently being done
