What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a healing art which has been practiced for over 2,500 years.  Although it is both ancient and rooted in a different culture, it has gained recognition and acceptance in this country.

As with any system of medicine, acupuncture emerged from the philosophy of it's culture.  Oriental thought is very much concerned with creating harmony - between humankind and nature, between individuals, and within  the body.  Harmony in the body results from balance between complementary opposites called yin and yang.  Acupuncture is a means of creating this balance, thus promoting wellness.

Acupuncture is based on the theory that the body is kept alive and healthy by a vital energy called "Qi".  Qi flows along specific pathways or "meridians"; acupuncture points are sites on these pathways.  The Qi must flow freely through the meridians and be of a certain strength and quality if each organ is to function properly.  Disease arises when the flow of Qi is impaired.  The goal of acupuncture therapy is to remove the blockages of Qi, thus insuring that it flows smoothly.

Disease, pain, impaired function or emotional discomfort are signals that something is not right within the person and requires attention.  Acupuncture addresses the underlying cause of dis-ease, thereby alleviating the symptoms of distress.
